Messy Church

messy church logoHeard about Messy Church but not sure how to set one up? Tried it but couldn’t quite make it work? Been running Messy Church for a while but run out of ideas? The Resource Library has just what you need…

For those new to Messy Church, we have the original Messy Church book by Lucy Moore that explains the concept, takes you through the steps and resources you need, and then gives you fifteen “units” – service themes and all the ideas you need to deliver them. We have three copies if you need to get a group up to speed quickly.

Messy Church 2 and Messy Church 3 each give you fifteen more units, plus some lessons that Lucy learned as Messy Church grew – I particularly like the “Letters to the Churches in Clodpool-in-the Marsh” in book 3, a fictional group of churches that shows you how to do Messy Church right mostly by NOT doing what they do…

Messy Church Theology, edited by George Lings, is a collection of essays that looks in more depth at what underlies Messy Church. Is it “really church” (spoiler – yes…). What does it mean to be a “messy disciple”? Is there a limit to how big a particular Messy Church should be? It’s probably most useful if you have been running a Messy Church for some time and want to evaluate how you are doing, or if you are facing pushback from those who see it as “only for children” or as “a stepping-stone to proper church”: both are firmly rejected by the Messy Church movement.

In Messy Hospitality Lucy Moore homes in on the theology and the practicalities of how hospitality is shown not just in the food on offer at Messy Church, but also at the welcome table, the activities and even at home. The book has five units on different aspects of hospitality for you to use.

Finally, there are three workbooks, which all do more or less what their titles suggest – Messy Crafts by Lucy Moore, Messy Easter by Jane Leadbetter, and Messy Christmas by both Lucy Moore and Jane Leadbetter!

All the books are in the library under reference CHI2.5. Please do come along and make use of them.
